Strain breast milk or not? This question is one of the most discussed among nursing women. There are doctors who are still aggressively advocating pumping.
The recommendations of the World Health Organization, on the contrary, are based on the rejection of pumping under the condition of properly tuned lactation.
Most experts argue that pumping is justified and appropriate only when necessary. What are the cases when expressing milk and how to do it correctly?
We will understand the intricacies of this procedure and answer the most exciting questions of women who are breastfeeding.
When should breast milk be expressed?
Consider the situations and cases when a woman needs pumping:
In children born prematurely, the sucking reflex is not developed. They do not know how to suck, but mothers are able to absorb milk. For such children, natural nutrition is a vital necessity. Breast milk, rich in healthy ingredients, accelerates growth and development.
"Lazy sucker" (weak sucking reflex)
Lazy suckers call children who suckle too slowly and for a long time when feeding. The causes of the underdeveloped reflex are quite serious, it can be caused by a variety of pathologies, including diseases of the central nervous system. Problems with the sucking reflex should not be a reason to stop lactation. There is an easier way, you can express the milk and give it through a bottle.
Reduced (insufficient) lactation
Is it reasonable to express milk if it is so little? On this occasion, the recommendations are based on the principle "all means are good." The process of pumping increases milk production, but with natural feeding lactation is more stable. And yet the struggle for it involves any means. Squeeze the chest with thoughts about the child and in his presence.
Immediately after birth, colostrum is produced in the breast of a woman. This is not milk, but for a child an excellent source of nutrition. Colostrum is useful, this nourishing substance perfectly meets the needs of the newborn in food. Milk comes on the 3rd day. Baby can not cope with the volume. Filled breasts should be emptied, if this is not done, lactation will decrease. Stinging maintains the rate of milk supply. It is impossible to decant until the last drop, as soon as the breast becomes soft, stop the pumping. Stagnant milk leads to mastitis. One of the reasons for this unpleasant phenomenon is improper pumping. A weak sucking reflex of the child can also provoke stagnation.
Acceptance of drugs that are excreted along with breast milk
When breastfeeding, many drugs are contraindicated. Nursing mothers also get sick and quite often there are situations when you have to resort to medication. To maintain lactation, the expressed milk must be poured. Give it to the child can not. You can feed the mixtures. If a woman knows about the upcoming medication in advance, you can stock up, strain, and freeze the milk.
Retracted (flat) nipple
This is a conditional reason, because the problem is solved. You can use special pads on the nipple. If this method does not help either, the breast is decanted and the baby is fed from the bottle.
Separation from the child
Breast feeding becomes a priority in cases where the mother can not always be close to the baby. This may be the exit to work or the need for treatment.
Milk preparation for the future
This need arises when, in the plans of the mother, the termination of breastfeeding. Not wanting to deprive a child of a valuable product, many make stocks. During storage, milk may lose some of its beneficial properties, the process of prolonged milk staying in the cold itself requires adherence to strict rules.
There are mothers who are frightened and alarmed by the appearance of their milk. It does not look like a cow. This bluish liquid can be very oily or, conversely, empty, look like ordinary ghee or some water. After several days of storage, the cream exfoliates in the milk. No matter what picture you see and what feelings you experience at the sight of your own milk, its value does not depend on the visual appeal. It fully meets all the requirements of your child, but on condition that the pumping is done according to all the rules.
You can sift the milk in two ways, with the help of a breast pump and your own hands. What to choose each woman decides on her own, sometimes on the advice of doctors.
Technique of expressing milk by hand
Like any responsible process, decanting requires preparation. The most important thing here is emotional mood. For good lactation, pumping is best done in the presence of a baby. If this is not possible, you can admire the photo. Constantly think about your little miracle, mentally touch it.
15 minutes before decanting massage your chest with light movements, drink warm water or tea, take a shower, let the baby touch the chest. Before decanting, be sure to wash your hands and take a comfortable position.
Place your thumb over the halo, conveniently place the ring and index fingers under it. The distance to the halo should be at least 3 cm. Squeeze your fingers in the direction of the ribs and slowly roll them forward towards the nipple. All movements must be confident and accurate. Getting the milk out of all the thoracic lobes helps moving the fingers around the circumference of the halo.
At the first decanting pain may occur, it is normal and not for long. Over time, the discomfort will disappear.
Milk, pouring out streams, a sign of proper pumping. If it just drips, then your hands are doing the wrong moves. Practice, learn and be prepared, that not everything can happen immediately.
Fingers should not slide onto the nipple, so it can be injured.
With abundant moisturizing of the skin, the chest and hands are wiped off, and then they continue to pump.
As soon as you feel that your chest has become lighter, stop pumping. Squeezing to the last drop and completely empty the chest is not recommended. Typically, the hand pumping technique is explained in the maternity hospital. If something does not work, there are difficulties, contact your doctor and consult.
It is impossible to press on the chest, rub it and massage it during manual decanting. Any painful movement reduces lactation.
Rules of expressing milk with a breast pump
Modern breastpumps, helpers of nursing women, allow to extract milk quickly, efficiently and without compromising comfort. There are several varieties of these convenient pumping devices. They differ in cost, manufacturer and mechanism of action. Knowing the advantages and disadvantages, a woman can choose the most suitable option for a breast pump. Someone convenient to use electrical devices, and someone chooses manual. In any case, there are rules of use that must be followed.
Study the instructions, prepare for decanting and make sure that the breast pump is perfectly clean:
Attach the funnel to the chest and notice that the nipple is taking place right in the center.
To create a vacuum, you must attach the funnel as tightly as possible to the chest.
For the process of squeezing on the electrical device, the start button is turned on, on the manual one, the piston is pressed or the pump (pear) is squeezed.
Manual breast pumps suggest non-stop hand work. All movements, effects on the pump, piston grip or pear should be harmonious and rhythmic.
Electrical devices simplify operation. Only control over the process is required. The power of pumping is regulated independently, as it is convenient to whom. At the final stage, the breast becomes soft, the milky stream turns into a trickle.
When pumping with a breast pump, watch the milk flow, it should be moderately active, and the process itself painless.
Storage of expressed breast milk
Every mother should learn the rules of storage of expressed milk. Neglect and carelessness deprive the milk of valuable qualities, it becomes dangerous to the health of the child.
Like any product, breast milk tends to deteriorate. It develops pathogenic bacteria. If the storage rules are violated, the microflora becomes pathogenic.
Where to express milk? Storage Tanks:
For one-off cases suitable baby bottles. Conveniently, the expressed milk is stored in them and then fed to the baby.
Electric breast pumps are provided with separate bottle containers. The milk is decanted into these containers, it is stored there, and if necessary, they put on the nipple and feed the baby.
For long-term storage, from 2 to 3 days, it is convenient to use plastic containers. They are sterile, designed to store milk, without any problems placed in the freezer (refrigerator).
There is an option easier and cheaper. Breast milk is allowed to be stored in baby food jars. It is better to use glass, it is enough to sterilize them for several minutes together with the lids. The only thing worth fearing is storing jars in the freezer, the glass may burst.
Practical and convenient packages of industrial production. They have a graduation, the date of decanting can be fixed on a special place. This is ideal for freezing breast milk.
It is desirable to strain the milk immediately into the container in which it will be stored. Transfusions are not recommended.
How long can the expressed milk be stored?
Room temperature allows storage of milk for 3 to 4 hours. Extremely undesirable exposure to direct sunlight.
In the refrigerator, the shelf life is up to 4 days.
Under the conditions of the freezer (at -18 ° C), the milk retains its beneficial properties for up to 6 months.
Where to store the expressed milk during a long journey, when there is no refrigerator?
Going on a trip, storing of expressed breast milk should be taken care of in advance:
Thermos. This is the most budget option. Thermos keeps warm and cold. Having cooled it from the inside, you can safely pour breast milk, it will not spoil. To cool the thermos can be used ice from boiled water.
Thermo bag. The optimum temperature is provided by cold elements.
Cooler bag. In the process of moving is the perfect solution. Compact bag is indispensable on long journeys.
Can breast milk be frozen?
The answer is simple, you can freeze. Modern mothers were lucky, before the advent of refrigeration devices, the problem of storing milk caused a lot of inconvenience. Nowadays, it is possible to store milk for half a year, the reserve of time ensures low temperature pressure.
How to freeze breast milk?
Before freezing the milk, it must be cooled. This should be done in natural conditions, that is, without getting out of the refrigerator. It is not recommended to change containers, pour milk.
To maintain sterility, cool and freeze in a single container. Freezing mode is activated after placing the milk in the freezer. There is a separate shelf, there should be no other products in the neighborhood, all contacts should be excluded.
Be sure to sign containers, specify the date of freezing. This is important, since milk cannot be stored for longer than the prescribed period. Elementary forgetfulness can lead to unpleasant consequences, and when you consider that we are talking about the health of the child, it is advisable to eliminate all risks.
How to warm up expressed breast milk?
Before giving the baby the expressed milk from the refrigerator, it is warmed in bottle warmers. You can warm in a water bath or simply hold it in hot water. Before heating the milk from the freezer, it is first defrosted in the refrigerator to a liquid state.
Do not reheat breast milk using boiling water and microwaves. Changing the structure, such methods kill all the nutrients, nutrients and can harm the health of the baby.
Warmed milk is not reusable. It does not matter where it was stored in the refrigerator or freezer, it is better to get rid of the remnants. During storage, the milk is divided into fractions in order to achieve integrity, the bottle is shaken well before feeding.
Breast milk is used as the main and additional nutrition. The benefits persist until boiling, so if you decide to cook porridge on it or make an omelet, keep in mind, all the best qualities of mother's milk will be destroyed by high-temperature processing. In it there will be no minerals and vitamins, protein will surely be curtailed and will be badly acquired.
Current questions about pumping
Do I need to express breast milk from two breasts at once? This need is estimated depending on the time of separation of the mother and baby. For long-term separation, two breasts are decanted. When a mother leaves for a couple of hours and feeds the baby before leaving, it is not necessary to make large stocks.
How often to express? The norm is 1.5 - 3 hours. Frequent pumping is not recommended, one child drinks one breast, the other one is decanted.
How many times to decant? It all depends on the situation. Straightening regularly, the woman focuses on feeding time. It is necessary to expect that the expressed milk suffices for the time of absence of mother.
Do you strain your chest at night? Staying at night allows you to keep lactation. This is relevant for cases where, due to circumstances, the mother is separated from the child. Strain regularly, 1 time in 3 hours. There may be more breastmilk than the baby drinks, but this is better than lack of it. It is possible to stockpile and stock up in case of need. If the mother is not a supporter of feeding frozen milk, you can just pour it. The process itself is important, pumping stimulates the production of milk in sufficient quantities. If breastfeeding is stopped at night, pumping at night is optional.
How long does it take? Manual pumping takes about an hour. No more than 15 minutes will be required for decanting a breast pump.
Is it possible to mix portions of milk, expressed in several approaches? Doctors do not recommend this. Even if the serving volumes are very different, refrain from mixing.
Is it possible to give milk that has been stored without cold for more than 4 hours? In the summer it is better not to risk it and be careful in handling breast milk. If the bottle has been in the sun, the shelf life is reduced. Under optimal storage conditions, the milk will not deteriorate, it will be suitable for feeding for 5-6 hours.
Is it possible to simultaneously feed and decant the second breast? It is possible, there are moms who manage to combine feeding with decanting, believing that this is how milk is released. This fact is not proven, just observation, but the fact that mother and child are constantly distracted is very bad. When feeding, the situation should be as calm and comfortable as possible for both.
Which is better - breast pump or manual pumping? Here everything is individual. A breast pump is safer and more reliable than a hand; its sterility with proper care should not be in doubt. There are no problems with manual pumping, if the skills and techniques are worked out.
Is breast milk that has been frozen helpful? Breast milk in any form is more useful and better adapted milk formulas. Freezing requires strict adherence to storage rules.Temperature and time should be monitored. Repeated freezing and temperature fluctuations are unacceptable. Having provided milk with good conditions, you can be sure of the preservation of its properties and unconditional advantages over mixtures.
Education: The diploma “Obstetrics and Gynecology” was obtained at the Russian State Medical University of the Federal Agency for Healthcare and Social Development (2010). In 2013, graduate school in NIMU named after. N.I. Pirogov.
Does it make sense to express breast milk? Whether breastfeeding is advisable, both young mothers and specialists are still actively discussing. It is not uncommon for doctors to promote decanting just like that, without giving convincing motives to support this need.
But if you follow the recommendations of the WHO, the need to express milk when properly established lactation is absent. Under such conditions, breast milk is produced on demand, since the release of the hormone oxytocinhappens exactly at the moment when mom needs to feed the baby.
Therefore, it is worth expressing milk only if there is a need to save it to a nursing mother. Below we will talk about when to do it, how to properly express milk, and how to properly store it at home.
When do you need to practice pumping?
So, whether to express milk after feeding depends on the situation. In fact, there are not so many cases when you need to decant. But precisely in those cases that will be mentioned, it is really necessary to do this. If there are questions about why decanting after feeding and whether to do it, the woman can always ask their doctor.
So, expressing breast milk should be practiced in the cases listed below:
If the baby was born prematurely
When a baby is born before the deadline, sucking reflex he doesn't have one yet, so he just can't suckle. However, the body of such a baby can easily absorb mother's milk, and, moreover, it is vitally important for a premature baby to get natural nutrition, which will provide him with all the necessary substances that activate his growth and improvement of all body systems.
The presence of pathologies in the baby, poorly developed sucking reflex
Babies who have a poorly developed sucking reflex are called “lazy suckers” in medicine. The weakly developed sucking reflex may be associated with various causes, among which are pathologies. central nervous system. But even if there is such a problem, it is not a reason to suspend lactation. You can practice pumping and water your baby from the bottle - it will be easier for him to suck.
The formation of lactation
After childbirth starts to work out colostrumwhich is not yet milk. Colostrum - more dense, saturated. And although it is produced a little, but the baby is very quickly saturated.
Breast milk appears 2-3 days after the baby is born, and its volume is usually very large. The child just can not cope with it. That is why the mother has to release the breasts, which become heavy. After all, if the milk does not suck the baby, it is for the body a signal that it needs to produce less. In order to ensure sufficient milk production, it is necessary to carry out pumping. But this should be done only until the chest is relieved and softened.
Lack of lactation
Many young mothers are faced with the advice that milk needs to be decanted, if it is produced a little, in order to stimulate its products in this way. Nevertheless, such recommendations are given not by all doctors. After all, breastfeeding and pumping are completely different things.
It is feeding that best stimulates the stay of milk. However, if a woman still tries by all means to establish lactation, you can try all available methods. So, if the mother stays near the baby and thinks about him during the pumping out, this helps stimulate the release of milk.
Milk stasis and the threat of mastitis
Such a condition may develop if the baby sucks the breast incorrectly, if the child has a poorly developed sucking reflex. Also stagnation leading to development mastitisIt is possible if the woman decanting is wrong. When mastitis is necessary to try to decant the sighting, from those slices that have hardened.
The use of drugs that are excreted in breast milk
During breastfeeding, very few drugs can be used, both on a plant and synthetic basis. If, however, the circumstances are such that a nursing mother is forced to take medicines that are prohibited when feeding, it is imperative to regularly decant and pour out the milk. The baby during this period will have to be fed with mixtures. However, lactation can be maintained in this way.
If the mother knows that she will have to start a course of treatment, you can try to prepare breast milk for future use, knowing how to freeze it properly for storage.
Inward, flat nipple
Such a reason is considered to be conditional, since at the present time it is possible to purchase special nipple pads, with the help of which breast sucking is greatly facilitated.
But if with the help of such a device it is impossible to adjust the nutrition of the baby, you will have to express your chest and practice feeding with a bottle.
Procurement for the future
In order to practice natural feeding as long as possible, mothers sometimes feed their babies in parallel and express milk in order to use it in the future.
However, it makes sense to do it only if the mother plans to stop breastfeeding soon, but wants to provide the baby with such a valuable product for as long as possible. It is important to remember how much milk costs in the freezer. It also has its expiration date. Moreover, with such storage, mother's milk to a certain extent loses its properties.
How to express breast milk correctly manually?
Mom, who for some reason is going to practice pumping, needs to know, not only how to express breast pump correctly, but also how to express breast milk with your hands correctly.
So, before you start expressing breast milk with your hands, you need to properly prepare for this process. To carry out everything as it should, initially it is worth watching a video of how to express milk manually.
If a woman needs to stimulate the release of milk, it is necessary to carry out the procedure next to the baby or at the same time look at his photo and think about it. Ideally, you need to touch the baby. Approximately 15 minutes before the process starts, it is worthwhile to drink some warm water or tea, and then make a light breast massage or let the child touch it. A warm shower helps to stimulate lactation.
How to decrypt correctly so that the process is most effective? First of all, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap. Next, place the thumb on the areola on top, 3 cm from the nipple, and the index and ringless to place below, opposite the large, just stepping back from the nipple. Breasts need to squeeze the fingers in the direction of the ribs, doing it gently, but confidently, squeezing milk. Such movements need to be repeated.
Young mother should consider the following points:
- To properly express the stagnant milk, do not feel sorry for yourself, squeezing your chest confidently enough.
- A woman should tune in to the fact that at first she might be hurt.
- If the whole procedure is carried out correctly, then it is not the drops that are allocated, but the trickles.
- To decant from all the slices, you need to gradually move your fingers in a circle.
- It is important to ensure that the fingers do not slip, facing the nipple, as it can be injured.
- If the skin of the breast has become too wet, you should gently wipe it and your hands with a clean cloth and continue to decant.
- Straining should be carried out not until the last drop, but until the breast becomes lighter and there is a feeling of emptiness.
On how to carry out this whole process, as well as how often you need to express milk, a woman should explain in a maternity hospital. However, if with its carrying out certain difficulties arise, and the question arises what to do if it does not decant, it is better to seek the help of a specialist.
How to express with a breast pump?
To facilitate this process for modern young mothers, are now widely used. breast pumps. These are special devices with the help of which it is possible to significantly simplify pumping. Currently, there are so many varieties of such devices. How much a breast pump costs depends on the device manufacturer, mechanism of action, and other features.
Preparing for the process of using a breast pump should be exactly the same as for the manual process. It is important that the device is sterile. The breast pump is always sold with the attached instructions. It is important to carefully understand it, since different models work differently.
It is also necessary to take into account all the general rules of mechanical pumping:
- The device funnel should be applied at the breast so that the nipple is right in its center.
- The funnel should fit snugly to the chest so that a vacuum is created. To do this, the chest must be dry.
- Next, you need to act as written in the instructions: either first compress the bulb or pump, or press the piston handle, or turn on the device by pressing a button if it is an electrical device.
- If the breast pump is manual, you need to constantly rhythmically press on the pump, the pear, the piston handle.
- The use of an electrical device requires only control - it is important to regulate the force with which it works, setting the power for yourself. When the process is completed, the breast softens and becomes empty, and the milk from the stream flows into droplets.
It is important that the milk goes smooth, active stream. As a rule, pumping with the help of a breast pump does not cause pain, discomfort when using some types of such a device appears only in the first minutes. After the end of the process, you need to thoroughly wash the breast pump and sterilize it.
How to store expressed breast milk correctly?
It is equally important for young mothers to know how to store breast milk after decanting and where to store, so that the baby gets the most useful product. It is necessary to strictly observe the rules of how to store mother's milk for the baby. After all, with improper storage, it becomes not only useless, but also capable of harm. Breast milk is the same food product as other dairy products. Therefore, it can deteriorate, sour. So, first of all, it is important to choose a suitable storage tank.
If the mom drains the milk at one time, enough bottles for storage after decanting, from which you can later feed the baby. Of course, before you store the expressed breast milk in a bottle, it must be sterilized.
If the mother uses an electric breast pump, then special containers are usually attached to it. Milk is collected in them, stored and then from them it is possible to give it to the baby, wearing a nipple on top.
However, many mothers are interested in what to do with the milk and whether it can be stored in the refrigerator if it is supposed to make a supply for a longer period. Those who are interested in whether it is possible to freeze breast milk should pay attention to special plastic containers, which can be purchased at pharmacies or in children's stores. Such sterile containers with contents can be stored both in the refrigerator and in the freezer.
If it is assumed that the storage of expressed breast milk will be held for a day or more, glass jars that contain baby food will do. Previously, they, along with the lids, need to be boiled in water for 2-3 minutes. However, it is better not to place glass containers in the freezer.
There are also special packages designed for food storage. They are very convenient to use, as they have a graduation, as well as a place for marking the date and time of pumping. Close these containers with a rivet or cord. And the answer to the question of whether it is possible to freeze milk in such a package is definitely affirmative: it is most convenient.
Mom should take into account that the contents should not be poured from one container into another: you should immediately decant the dishes in which the storage will take place.
How long can milk be stored?
It is important for each mother to clearly know how much breast milk expressed is stored so as not to be mistaken and not give the baby a spoiled product. First of all, it is important to know how much breast milk is stored at room temperature. Without a refrigerator it can be stored no more than 4 hours. Therefore, it is possible to store the product for one meal only. It is important that it is not affected by direct sunlight.
Those who are interested in how much breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator should take into account that at a temperature of from 0 to 4 degrees it can be kept for about 4 days. But at the same time it is very important that the temperature is always the same, so it is better to keep it near the back wall of the refrigerator. How much breast milk is stored in the refrigerator depends on the quality of the unit. If the refrigerator works intermittently and is unable to maintain the same temperature, it is better not to risk keeping the milk in it for several days.
Another issue that is important for moms seeking to preserve frozen milk for the future, how much can be stored breast milk after decanting in the freezer. How much breast milk is stored in the freezer depends on the temperature. If the freezing temperature is about -18 degrees Celsius, the shelf life of the product is about six months. With low-temperature storage, you can get a huge amount of time, which is why freezing is so popular among mothers.
Before freezing the milk, it must be refrigerated in the same container in which it will later be stored in the freezer. We must take care that once again not to pour milk. The fewer transfusions, the more sterile and quality the product will be. When the container is completely cooled, it must be placed in the freezer and turned on the freezing mode. It is important to immediately select a separate shelf or drawer in the freezer for storing baby food, to prevent its contact with any other products. You should also sign the tank, be sure to indicate the date when the freezing was performed.
How to store breast milk if you have a long move?
To ensure your baby has a safe and healthy diet, it is best to buy special devices before moving out:
- cooler bag with cold elements,
- thermo bag with the same elements
- a thermos that is able to retain not only heat, but also cold, for which it needs to be pre-cooled and poured chilled milk there.
With such devices baby can provide a fresh and high-quality product, even in the conditions of the move.
How to warm up the expressed milk?
Before you warm up baby food from the refrigerator or freezer, you need to take exactly the amount that your baby needs. It should be warmed up in a water bath, in a special device on which bottles are heated, or in hot water. It is best to gradually defrost the product in the refrigerator to a liquid state, and later heat it up using the methods mentioned.
Categorically should not be used for heating convection and microwave ovens. Since the exposure to microwaves is fraught with the fact that nutrients are destroyed and the structure of milk changes, such a product can harm the baby. After heating, the product can be used only once - all residues after feeding should be poured. Before you start feeding, you need to shake the bottle.
How to apply milk that has been decanted?
Depending on how much milk can be decanted at a time, a woman can use it differently. So, it is used as the main food, bred them baby cereal. However, if you boil the mother's milk, cooking on it cereals, omelets and other children's dishes, the final product will not be useful for the baby. After boiling, the nutrients in its composition will be destroyed, and the protein will be poorly absorbed.
Should I express both breasts?
It all depends on what goals the woman pursues, for how long she intends to part with the baby, and, accordingly, how much to feed the baby with breast milk.
If the mother’s care is supposed to take several hours, and it will be necessary to feed the expressed milk once, then pumping from one breast is enough. But if the absence of the mother takes a longer time, then full feeding of expressed milk from the bottle can be ensured by pumping both breasts.
How often do I need to pump?
A woman should independently determine how much to feed the baby and how often you can express breast. However, do not do this more often than once per hour. It is best to interval ranged from one and a half hours to three. To make everything as comfortable as possible, you can give one breast to the baby and decant the second.
How many times do I need to decant?
It all depends on the situation in which the young mother finds herself. In some cases, you have to practice it all the time, sometimes it is enough just to periodically express to ensure uninterrupted natural feeding. If this process is regular, then it is important to focus on the time when the baby is used to taking the breast. Of course, the mother should take care of the required amount of breast milk while it is absent.
Do I need to decant at night?
If immediately after the birth of the baby they are separated from the mother, it is very important to decant at night, as this process will help maintain lactation. But for the successful establishment of lactation you need to do it at least once every three hours. During this period, you can prepare milk for the future, or simply pour it out if the newborn cannot consume such a quantity of it. The most important thing these days is to adjust the feeding process, in which regular pumping will help. If at night the child does not suck the breast, night pumping is not needed.
Will it be possible to feed the baby and at the same time express the second breast?
Such practice is very difficult technically. However, some women still do it. Many mothers believe that this method allows you to stimulate milk production. If this does not interfere with the baby, you can practice this way. However, most women distract it from the baby. Therefore, it is desirable to still distinguish between feeding and pumping.
It is necessary to cuddle in the following situations:
- the birth of a premature baby who is temporarily excommunicated from the mother due to the need for treatment (or is with the mother, but cannot adequately capture the nipple and suck the breast),
- having a baby with any disease that requires medical intervention and / or interferes with the sucking process,
- separation of the mother from the child for any reasons (the illness of the mother or the child, the departure of the mother to work, etc.). In this embodiment, pumping is necessary both to meet the needs of the child and to preserve the mother's lactation. If mother has gone to work and regularly drains, it is worthwhile to leave for morning, evening and night feeds, if possible.
- feeling of overflow of mammary glands. This happens more often in the early stages of lactation. Optimally in such situations, attach the child to the chest. If this cannot be done for any reason, it is possible to express some milk (only until the discomfort disappears, but not all the milk that can be expressed)
- in the early stages of the introduction of complementary foods (in the preparation of cereal in breast milk).
The optimal supply of nutrients and immunoglobulins to the baby is ensured by feeding the newly expressed milk (for example, if the mother went to work and regularly drains, the baby can receive milk that has been decanted yesterday).
Long-term storage of milk (for several months) no longer satisfies all the needs of the child, since the composition of breast milk changes from month to month, adjusting to the needs of the baby.
In this regard, if the mother, for example, has to be hospitalized, it is better to decant the required amount of milk several days before being hospitalized than to collect a large “strategic reserve” in advance. Obviously, there are emergency cases when it is unknown in advance that the mother and child will have to part. In these situations, it is important to remember 2 points:
- it is better to give the baby breast milk stored 6 months than the mixture,
- if in unforeseen circumstances you had to be separated from the child, and there is no breast milk supply left at home, a catastrophe will not occur if the child eats the mixture for several days. It is fundamentally important in such a situation that mothers should regularly express themselves to preserve lactation (if successful, it is possible to transfer this milk to the baby, if unsuccessful (using a number of preparations), milk will have to be poured, but this is extremely important to maintain breastfeeding when reunited with the baby).
If you still have to decant, you need to follow a number of rules.
How much to store expressed breast milk?
- At room temperature, milk can be stored without refrigeration for about 4 hours. Naturally, it should not be under the action of the sun.
- In the refrigerator at a temperature range from 0 to 4 C, milk can be stored for up to 4 days, but having provided it with the same temperature, for which the milk should be placed closer to the back wall of the refrigerator.
- In the freezer at a temperature of about -18 ° C, milk can be stored for up to six months.
- From here it is also clear where to store the expressed breast milk. When stored for more than 4 hours only in the refrigerator, and frozen milk - only in the freezer.

If necessary, travel should be purchased:
- cooler bag
- thermal bag - they are equipped with special coolant elements that provide a certain temperature
- The usual thermos, which, in addition to preserving heat, perfectly retains the cold - chilled breast milk is poured into the thermos that has been pre-cooled from the inside. You can cool the thermos using ice, frozen from boiled water.
Can breast milk be frozen? This question has begun to worry nursing mothers since the advent of household freezers. Low-temperature storage provides an excellent supply of time - up to six months, so it is actively used by mothers.
How to freeze breast milk? Before freezing, milk is naturally cooled in the refrigerator in the same container in which it will be frozen. The fewer transfusions from the tank to the tank will be when harvesting milk, the more sterile it will be later.
After cooling, the container with milk is placed in the freezer and include freezing mode. To store frozen milk, you need to allocate a separate shelf, excluding contact with other food products. Do not forget to sign each container, putting down the date of freezing.
Feeding with expressed breast milk
How to warm up expressed breast milk? After being stored in the refrigerator, the milk should be warmed in a water bath, in hot water or in a special device for heating bottles. After storage in the freezer, the milk is thawed in the refrigerator to a liquid state, and then heated by the methods described above.
In no case do not use microwave and convection ovens, as well as boiling water for heating and defrosting milk! Microwaves kill all the nutrients, the structure of milk changes and instead of being good, the child only harms the baby.
Milk that is heated, both after the refrigerator and after the freezer, should be used at a time, the residue should be poured. Before feeding, the bottle should be shaken, since the milk during storage is divided into fractions.
How can expressed breast milk be used? You can give it as the main food, make porridge on it, soak cookies in it. Some mothers practice the use of breast milk in the preparation of children's meals - omelets, cereals and other things, but the good from milk that has passed through boiling is not enough, antibodies and vitamins will be mercilessly destroyed, and the protein will be curtailed and become poorly digestible.
How many times to decant?
Again, depending on the situation - it can be both sporadic and permanent. If this is regular pumping, the mother should be guided by the time intervals in which the baby usually sucks. Of course, the harvested milk should be enough for the child for the time that mom plans to spend away from him.
Do you strain your chest at night?
When parting with a baby from birth, night pumping is a prerequisite to keep lactation, and this should be done at least 1 time in 3 hours. Perhaps this amount of milk a child and not to drink, especially if it is premature, but it can always be prepared for future use or, in extreme cases, poured out, if the mother does not recognize the value of frozen breast milk. In this case, the process of launching the production of further portions of milk, which is started by decanting, is important. If the mother does not breastfeed at night, then it is not necessary to do it at night.
Is it possible to simultaneously feed and decant the second breast?
Technically, it is difficult to imagine, but some mothers manage to feed both the baby and express themselves at the same time, arguing that in this case there is more milk. If at the same time the child does not suffer, then it is possible and so, but only if you express your hand with it. But it is better not to do so, because you have to constantly be distracted from the child.
